Stream House

Strict zoning setbacks on this small, steeply sloping site in the Hollywood Hills dictated a solution conceived as a narrow sliver of space. Along with a complete renovation of the existing structure, we added a 12 ft wide, wood-clad element to house an upper level master suite, an extension to the living room, and a small reading nook. As conventional foundations were prohibitively expensive on such a steep slope, we balanced the new structure on three thin steel columns - and in doing so discovered a unique opportunity in the exposed underside of the house.

The lot straddles a steep valley bisected by a beautiful year-round stream. Unfortunately, this rare amenity was invisible from the existing house - one could see it only by peering straight down over the edge of the rear deck. To bring this unique view into the home, we folded a large rear window under the house and across the dining room floor, framing a surprising view of the stream below.
