Post and Beam

This project was an exercise in simplification. The active texture of slump block and mortar was softened with a thick coat of cementitious paint. The number of wood mullions and window divisions was reduced, creating uninterrupted expanses of glass. The original kitchen, which had grown cluttered and dated was replaced with a new one, and new cherry floors were laid in strategic rooms.

Most dramatically, the master bathroom was re-visualized: the cramped bathroom with its tub/shower combination was replaced by one designed to take advantage of the adjacent bamboo courtyard. A separate shower with glazed walls and ceilings was placed at the end of the courtyard (the only new square footage added); the effect is one of showering outside amongst the foliage and under the sky.
