Crossing Water

The house presents an enigmatic face to the visitor, who, after ascending a long drive and arriving at a square, gravel-paved court, is directed to a carefully framed view of the distant city and hills. The architecture of the arrival sequence is more about absence than presence; opposing walls of rough, stacked stone are spanned by a spare plaster volume – the void below, the view beyond, and the sky's reflection (in a shallow pool of water, below) say everything that is needed, and nothing more.

Reminiscent of Ando's 'Water Temple', a flight of stone steps pierces the expanse of water and leads one down to the home's entry.
